Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best height and location for mounting the SMART FENCE Control Station? Does placing it higher improve the connection?
We recommend mounting the Control Station at least 6 feet above the ground. Placing it higher can improve the signal, but avoid direct sunlight or extreme heat, like on rooftops, which can cause overheating. For best performance, choose a shaded, elevated spot away from large metal objects and higher than surrounding structures.
Will metal objects affect the boundary?
Metal objects can interfere with the boundary signal—it’s something that happens with all radio frequency systems. Objects like cars, sheds, or even appliances inside the house can bend the boundary and reduce the range. To help with this, try mounting the Control Station higher so the signal can travel over large objects. For the best results, place it on the side of the yard where your dog spends most of their time.
Will weather conditions like rain affect the Control Station?
The Dogtra SMART FENCE is fully IPX9K waterproof, making it safe for use in rain, and it operates reliably in temperatures from 14° to 113°F.
Can I leave the Control Station plugged in outside and use USB extension cables to place it higher?
Yes, you can. It comes with 10 feet long USB-C to A cable. The USB-A end can be extended by any aftermarket USB extension cable, but ensure the extended section is properly waterproofed.
Can I use the SMART FENCE while traveling or outdoors?
Yes. The Control Station is a rechargeable, compact unit that’s easy to take on outdoor trips. Its battery lasts up to 48 hours, and the receiver collar lasts about 120 hours, with both fully charging in just 2 hours.
Is the boundary customizable?
No, the boundary shape is not customizable. It is only circular shape with range in preset sizes.
Why is my boundary shape and size changing?
Like all wireless fences, SmartFence can be affected by interference from nearby objects, especially metal. The benefit with SmartFence is that it alerts you both when your dog crosses the boundary and if the receiver ever disconnects.
Why does the SMART FENCE receiver collar show as "Out" when my dog is next to me?
The virtual fence is defined by the signal from the SMART FENCE control station at the center point. The distance from the control station—not the location of your smartphone—determines your dog’s status.
Can it cover both the front and back yard?
Because radio signals can be blocked by the house, the range may be shorter on the opposite side. We recommend testing the range first and then choosing the side of the yard where you’d most like your dog to be contained.
Can I get another Control Station to extend the range?
No, it will not extend the range. Each receiver collar is synced to one Control Station only.
How do I identify and test the virtual boundary?
To find the boundary, set the receiver to tone mode and walk away from the Control Station while holding it, moving in and out of the signal area. Once you identify the boundary, place flags along it and use flag training to help your dog learn the safe area.
Will the SMART FENCE collar still work if I am out of the Bluetooth Range?
Yes, the SMART FENCE will still function, even when you are outside the Bluetooth Range. However, you will not receive notifications through your app.
How does the Control Station alert me when my dog leaves the boundary?
The Control Station beeps when your dog reaches the boundary. If your dog crosses the boundary, the beep will keep going until you mute it using the orange button on the station or the app. No correction happens once your dog is back inside the safe zone.
How loud is the Control Station alarm?
The Control Station’s alarm is 85 decibels, about as loud as a standard residential fire alarm. Depending on your surroundings, the sound may echo more or less.
How do I turn off the alarm?
You can mute the alarm by pressing the orange button on the Control Station or using the app via Bluetooth. The “At boundary” alarm switches automatically, while the “Crossed boundary” alarm keeps sounding until you turn it off.
What happens when the receiver collar gets disconnected within the range?
If the collar disconnects, the app will show “Could not find,” the Control Station will sound a distinct alarm, and the collar’s LED will turn purple. While disconnected, the collar won’t provide any stimulation. Once it reconnects, it will resume correction if the dog is outside the boundary.
Can I check on my dog remotely?
No, the DOGTRA SMART FENCE does not have live tracking.
Will I get alerts if I leave the house?
No, the SMART FENCE app will not alert you when you leave your house. You must be in Bluetooth range (33 feet) to receive notifications. However, the system will still be working and the Control Station will sound off, even when you are not home.
How will I know if my dog is out of the boundary if I am not home?
You won't receive any notifications when you are outside Bluetooth range.
How do I change the receiver settings and range size?
Settings can be adjusted either on the control station or through the app. Ensure the app is connected to the control station via Bluetooth to apply changes. The receiver collar must also be within range to receive updates.
Will my dog receive a correction when returning to the safe zone?
No, corrections are applied only at the boundary or when crossing it. Once your dog goes outside or returns to the safe zone, SMART FENCE will not continue corrections, ensuring the dog’s safety and wellbeing.
How long does the correction last when my dog reaches the virtual fence boundary?
If your dog crosses the boundary, the collar corrects for up to 12 seconds and then stops, helping them learn to stay within the perimeter without confusion.
Why does the SMART FENCE have 24 levels, and how does that affect my dog's safety?
The SMART FENCE has 24 levels to give you precise control while keeping your dog safe. These levels are designed to provide humane correction that helps your dog learn the boundary without unnecessary discomfort.
Is this system suitable for dogs of all sizes? What are the neck size and weight requirements?
The SMART FENCE works for dogs with necks 11” or larger. The minimum weight is 35 lbs, and the strap length is 3/4" x 28".
Is training required for me and/or my dog to use SMART FENCE?
Yes. We provide a complimentary flag training guide for you to follow. If your dog struggles with training, we recommend consulting a local canine trainer for additional support.
Can I use the SMART FENCE without the app?
SMART FENCE works without the app. The app is optional and lets you adjust settings, see notifications, and give manual corrections via Bluetooth to the Control Station. It connects only to the station, and cannot move the boundary.
Is 2.4 Ghz radio frequency on SMART FENCE more accurate and/or more consistent than other products in the marketplace?
Dogtra SMART FENCE uses the 2.4 GHz which is a higher frequency, which is generally more accurate and consistent than lower frequency.
Is the SMART FENCE collar and control station waterproof?
Yes, like all Dogtra training devices, both have an IPX9K waterproof rating—surpassing military-grade waterproof and dustproof standards.
How can I check the battery life status of the Control Station and/or receiver?
You can view the status on either Control Station screen or the app. On the receiver collar, LED indicator light will also tell you the battery status.
